  1. ACLU frustrated by kids in Michigan and Pennsylvania (7/94)

  8.        Graduating seniors at the Zeeland High School in the western 
  9. Michigan town of Zeeland turned a deaf ear to pleas from the 
  10. American Civil Liberties Union to be a plaintiff in a prayer-blocking 
  11. lawsuit. Instead they chose to "embrace their parents' religious 
  12. heritage and snub the ACLU by praying at their graduation 
  13. ceremony," according to United Press International.
  14.        The ACLU spent six months trying to find a student in the town 
  15. of 5,400 willing to be named on the suit against the school district.
  16.        No student came forward and an ACLU spokeswoman said the 
  17. lawsuit plan had been dropped.
  18.        Zeeland  Superintendent Gary Feenstra said the ACLU decision 
  19. vindicated a district policy that lets students choose whether or not to 
  20. pray at graduation. "We feel good about it," Feenstra said. "We feel we 
  21. are on solid ground and are doing what's right for the kids."
  22.        Prayer opened the commencement for 190 graduating seniors. 
  23. Most of Zeeland's residents belong to local churches. "Zeeland High 
  24. has traditionally included prayer at graduation," reported UPI. "But last 
  25. year, after the ACLU objected for the first time, the school district 
  26. formed a committee of students, parents, and teachers to recommend 
  27. a policy for future graduations. A committee came up with a 
  28. recommendation that mirrored a Texas school's prayer policy upheld 
  29. last year by federal courts. It allowed student-initiated prayer, free of 
  30. input from faculty or administrators."
  31.        The ACLU responded by sending a letter to the local newspaper 
  32. editor to solicit for a plaintiff, saying it needed a student who thought 
  33. the prayer policy violated his or her civil rights.
  34.        Feenstra said in pressing the issue the ACLU had overlooked one 
  35. of the students' rights: The right to choose whether to pray at 
  36. graduation. "We truly believe students have a right to pray," he said.
  37.        In Clearfield, Pennsylvania, the ACLU also failed to stop students 
  38. from making any religious references during graduation ceremonies. 
  39. Clearfield Area School District officials refused the ACLU's demand for 
  40. written assurances that students would not make any religious 
  41. references at their commencement.
  42.        School district attorney Carl Beard said the ACLU wanted a written 
  43. guarantee that the students wouldn't spontaneously ad lib prayers or 
  44. public thanksgivings to Almighty God. 
  45.        However, said Beard, "I don't know how to prevent that, short of 
  46. going up there and gagging them or pulling them off the stage."
